Tomato-Poached Fish with Chili Oil, Shallots & Herbs

Its a food review!! The whole original intention of this blog believe it or not lol. I am thankful for all of you that let me mentally vent and be mostly me here. I didn't expect a cod related song in popular music so I didn't even try to find one, you just got a pun. Actually its a decent pun because this is a review of the Marley Spoon Tomato-Poached Fish with Chili Oil, Shallots & Herbs. Confession, Gatherer didn't actually pick the recipes this week...she may have forgotten to cancel a box and select choices as she currently uses 2 services. Oops. Even bigger oops...the Natives and Hunter will be visiting an rental cave with their ancestors (my in-laws) for part of the week for Spring Break. This means I have 6 meals for 4 people each and there will be one person home until the next delivery. Gatherer got smart and pawned herself off on friends for one of the days and I'm going to cook one of the meals for a few of the awesome ladies I hang out with at the gym. They work there, they probably don't know I call them my friends. Its fine, I'm sure they'll just adopt my introverted ass as a friend. Focus Gatherer, we are talking about food. I definitely wouldn't have picked this. Cod is not my favorite of the swimming proteins. I'll eat it but I rarely have anything outstanding to say about it. There are also vegetables in this that the Natives HATE (roasted red peppers, one of my favorites of course). So when I went to make it, I was prepared for us all to either hate it or at least be unimpressed. If you've hung out here a minute you will quickly realize that when I am mentally prepared for battle, I am woefully wrong. I probably could have put a little more chili flakes for the chili oil and the Natives and Hunter would have been fine. I could have put A LOT more chili flakes in the chili oil and I would have been fine. The corn was missing from my box, so I did need to send Hunter off to kill some wild frozen corn at our local foraging hole (grocery store). Corn is cheap and it wasn't worth my time to complain so I let this one go. I tried to use the broiler to warm the tortillas but do yourself a solid and just grab that cast iron to do it...so much better and its what I decided to do about half way through the process. The Natives had to be forced to eat their corn of all things and tried to leave a few pieces of fish. Personally, that shit was good yo. Like really good. I had to talk myself out of going to get more of the poaching broth and eat it with the rest of the tortillas. The cod was better than usual. I dried the heck out of it before hand so maybe that's the trick, get out as much moisture as possible before cooking. I'm still not giving it a place as my favorite fish, but it wasn't as disappointing or bland as I was anticipating. It was bright and was a great summer "soup" option with very simple mise en place and all ingredients very easy to find at any grocery store. This one impressed me. I'm going to give it a

Rating: 3.5 sweet teas

but I think its like a chick-fil-a sweet tea with the good ice, and if you are like me you want a little splash of lemonade in it. It might be closer to a 4 teas if it something a little smoky to balance it out or maybe if I had the heat right on the chili oil.
